Overview

Between October and March the sun in Sweden is too low to make vitamin D in skin, and the food sources are oily fish and fortified products. Vitamin D is the one supplement I take in winter without debate, and most public health bodies in northern Europe say the same.

Most vitamin D3 is extracted from sheep's wool. Ours is from lichen, which is the plant-based form that is actually D3 rather than the weaker D2. The dose is 25 micrograms, which is the amount the UK guidance names and well under the European upper limit of 100.

K2 is in the same capsule because the two are usually taken together and because one capsule is easier to remember than two.

Who it is for, and precautions

General information about a planned product, not advice for you. A pharmacist or doctor knows your medicines; we do not.

Adults. The planned dose is within the EU and UK guidance for a daily supplement.

  • If you take an anticoagulant such as warfarin, do not take vitamin K2 without your doctor's agreement.
  • Do not combine with other vitamin D products without checking the total.
  • Keep out of reach of young children.

Questions

Why not a higher dose?

Because the 25 µg figure is what the public guidance names for a daily supplement, and higher doses belong with a blood test and a doctor, not a jar on a shelf.

Why K2 at all?

It is a common pairing and the authorized wording for vitamin K is about bones, which is the same reason most people take vitamin D. We say no more than that.
