Overview

I do not argue about B12. There is no reliable plant source, fortified foods are patchy, and the stores run down slowly enough that people only notice years later. If you eat plants and take one supplement, this is the one, and it should be boring, cheap and impossible to get wrong.

The dose is 1,000 micrograms because the body absorbs only a small fraction of a large oral dose, so a big daily tablet is how a plant-based adult reaches the small daily amount that matters. A missed day is fine; a missed year is not.

It is cyanocobalamin, the form with the longest track record and the most stable shelf life. The other forms are not better absorbed, whatever the label next to ours says.

Questions

Is 1,000 µg too much?

No upper limit has been set for B12 by EFSA or the NIH because no harm has been found at any oral dose. The large dose exists because absorption is a small fraction.

Why not methylcobalamin?

Because the public health bodies find no absorption difference between the forms, and cyanocobalamin is the most stable one in a tablet.
