Overview

Magnesium is everywhere on a plant plate: pumpkin seeds, beans, oats, dark leaves. Most of my magnesium comes from food and I would rather it stayed that way. A supplement is for the stretch of weeks when the plate is thin, or for people whose intake sits under the reference value year after year.

We chose the bisglycinate form because it is gentle on the stomach at the dose we use, and because the glycine it is bound to is a plain amino acid. The elemental magnesium is 250 milligrams, which is the European food safety ceiling for a supplement, on purpose. More is not better here; more is a laxative.

You will not find the word sleep on this label, or the word cramp. The register does not allow either, and the published work does not back either for healthy adults. What the register does allow is printed below, word for word.

  • Take two hours apart from some antibiotics and bisphosphonates; ask your pharmacist which.
  • Keep out of reach of young children.

Questions

Why 250 mg and not 400?

Because 250 mg is the European upper level for supplemental magnesium set to avoid a laxative effect, and because food carries the rest.

Morning or evening?

Either. Take it with food, whenever you will remember it.
