Overview

Flax, chia and walnuts carry the short omega-3, and the body converts only a small share of it to the long forms. People who eat no fish get around 4 milligrams of DHA a day from food. That is the gap, and the honest way to close it is the same oil fish oil comes from, one step earlier in the food chain.

Schizochytrium is a microalgae grown in tanks, which means no fish, no ocean, and a far cleaner oil than one squeezed out of an animal at the top of a food chain. It is an authorized novel food in Europe, which matters for the label.

The specification is set so that a daily serving carries at least 250 mg of DHA, because that is the amount at which the authorized wording for DHA begins. Less than that and the words on the label would be unlawful.

Questions

Is algae oil as good as fish oil?

It is the same DHA and EPA. The fish get theirs from algae in the first place.

Will it repeat on me?

Algal oil is far milder than fish oil, and taking it with a meal removes most of what is left.
